Flood Stage Potomac Run

On Tuesday, Peter and I decided to do a gorge run right as the river was peaking at about 10.2ft on the little falls gage, which translates to about 140,000 cfs. Last year we ran the gorge at 8ft (~80,000cfs) and thought it was insane, so clearly 140,00cfs would be fun. Here is a picture Irene took that same dayWe paddled up the canal and put in at Sandy beach, or what was left of it. As we were paddling up the canal a photographer from the Examiner took our picture and we ended up on pg. 5 of the Wed. edition, which was cool. At sandy beach there were huge whirlpools and the water was flowing extremely fast. Looking up stream at odeck was pretty intense. After the bend in the river the "jumps" started forming. Here it was just pure chaos with the amount of water flowing through a fairly narrow area. The center island between MD and center chute was forming a few holes, peter even surfed one. All in all the potomac at flood stage was an amazing sight, but not a recommended run for beginners. Enjoy the pictures.
