Some Utube links below from the 8th during a high water event (7ft or so), the 15th in the 4's, and this past saturday in the 5's. One of the best shots is of Ted ferrying from Sandy Beach to the Garage. There wasn't a great struggle there, really good exit angle and nice smooth even strokes.

Just watched the 3/22/08 video. Saw three things happening consistently as folks maneuvered in the moving water.
1. Stokes put in just in front of the hips
2. Strokes that splashed
3. Lots of little strokes
The first two lead to the third. To take meaningful forward and sweep strokes, you need to get the blade in the water up beyond your knees. If you are getting a lot of splash with each stroke, you are pulling before the blade is in the water. Both of these mean that you are getting no power --- thus you take lots of strokes.
Rotate from the waist and extend your arms a bit to get your blade forward. (Relax your grip!) Put the blade completely in the water, like you were sheathing a knife. Then pull your hips/boat forward to the blade with the rotation of your waist...resisting the urge to pull with the biceps.
Presto! You didn't know you were so strong, did you? :-)
